3 Easy Toddler Meals
We did Baby Led Weaning with both of our children which means that instead of making and feeding them purees, we introduced them to finger foods from around 6 months old, when they were showing signs of being ready to start solids. You can read about our experience of Baby Led Weaning here and my tips on starting solid foods with your baby but as my two are now bigger, I thought I’d share 3 easy toddler meals we give them a lot.
It’s very rare that I would make something completely separate for the kids, who are now 1 and 3 years old. They either have exactly the same as we are eating or I adjust their portion slightly.
This saves me so much time when I’m preparing our meals plus it stops them wanting what is on our plate instead, as they have the same thing!
Here are 3 easy toddler meals I serve on a very regular basis and how I slightly adjust them to make them toddler-friendly meals:
1. Chilli con Carne
This is one meal that can be so easily tailored for both kids and adults – as you might do if you liked spicy food or your partner didn’t.
Basically, make up a batch of chilli but save adding any chilli powder or cumin until near the end. When the chilli and rice is cooked, I take out a spoonful for each of my kids and while that is cooling down, I add chilli powder and cumin powder to the remaining chilli until it’s at the right level of spiciness for me and Mr M! This isn’t rocket science, just a little tip that works well for us.
By the time the chilli is finished and served, the kids’ food has cooled down enough so that we can all eat together.
Chilli is chunky enough to be easily eaten with kids cutlery or a toddler grasp. Do let me know if you’d like me to post my favourite Chilli recipe.
2. Sunday Roast
I love cooking a Sunday roast and the kids seem to love wolfing it down! For this, I do not change the recipe at all – well unless I’m making red wine gravy!
Otherwise, the kids eat exactly the same. All I do is let their portion cool down before they eat it and I cut the meat and vegetables into fingers and chunks that my toddler can easily pick up and my 3 year old can pick up with her fork.
For warmer days and lunchtimes, the kids love wraps. My 3 year old feels very grown up eating a wrap instead of a sandwich!
I like to fill their wraps with tuna mayo, ham, chicken, cheese and more. It’s best not to overfill them though and also to wrap them up as tightly as possible so that they don’t fall apart too much when the kids pick them up.
As well as the wrap, I add a little ‘side salad’ like chopped cherry tomatoes, cucumber and carrot sticks.
So there are my 3 easy toddler meals!
The plates we use are from b.box – aren’t they cute! The b.box range is available at Biome.
What do your little kids love to eat?
