Feature Flip #02 What Katy Said
Welcome back to Feature Flip! Feature Flip is dedicated to showcasing some great features run by my fellow bloggers.
This week, I’m turning the tables on the fabulous Katy from What Katy Said!
Tell us about your Series – Real Mums
This feature has been about celebrating real mums. Mums are amazing and come in all shapes and sizes but sometimes we can feel alone, we can feel as though we are the only ones struggling to keep on top of things. This is the very last in the series, one that has run for a year now and one I am so proud of. Hopefully you have been enjoying reading about mums, to see that we are all the same – all brilliant at what we do.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family
I live in Herts with my husband Mr F and our two little girls, Little G who is 4 and LJ who is 2 years old. We are expecting our third baby this August so the next few months are going to be a bit tricky!
Describe a typical day in your life
I am very lucky that I only do one day a week at work, I am a supply teacher so get to choose as and when. Our typical day is pretty relaxed though as Little G has an afternoon slot at nursery. Our mornings are spent doing crafts or some other activity – LJ loves dolls so we play ‘house’ quite a bit. Lunchtime means a quick drop off to school and then LJ and I have lunch together before she goes off to have a nap.
I use those couple of hours to catch up with any urgent blog work, answering emails etc. I used to spend a big chunk of the afternoon doing housework but thanks to KonMari I am now free from that and can even watch a bit of tv!
At 3pm we head off to collect Little G and then I prepare dinner while they watch a bit of tv or play somehting together. They are so close and are the very best of friends so are always by each other’s side.
Mr F gets home at 5pm which is fab, we eat together at the table- something I feel is very important. He then plays with them or gives them a bath before their bedtime. He is a real hands on dad and is totally wrapped around their little fingers haha! He jokes that he is outnumbered but he secretly loves it!
The girls go to bed at 7pm on the dot and if I have posts to write I will get them done first before maybe watching a dvd or something on tv with Mr F. Recently I have not been blogging or spending any time with him – going to bed at 7pm myself. Pregnancy just wipes you out doesn’t it?
What is the best thing about being a mum?
The best thing for me is actually being someone’s mum, you know? Having them call me mummy makes me smile every single time. I know how much I love my mum and to know they love me just the same just fills me with happiness.
What have you found hardest about motherhood?
Even before this pregnancy I would have said the same but this time around has confirmed it – being a parent whilst being pregnant! The days when the girls have wanted me to play and I have had to say no as I felt so queasy. Little G got a raw deal when I was pregnant with LJ, at least they have had each other this time but I have still had that awful mummy guilt.
How has your body changed?
Besides my huge bump right now, not a lot. I have never been a skinny person and so am quite used to curves. My attitude to my body has changed now though. Before having my girls I hated when I was a little heavier. But now I recognise that I am their role model and if I view myself negatively they will grow up feeling the same about their bodies. We all eat healthily and you will never hear me ask if my bum looks big.
Do you wear make-up? If so, what does your routine look like?
I wear make-up most days, it just makes me feel so much more confident. I don’t wear anything heavy although if I listed all of the products you would think so! Haha! I just give a natural look, no bright colours etc.. If I don’t fancy makeup then I still cleanse and moisturise each day and will wear some Number 7 Total Effects with a hint of foundation just to take the deathly pale look away!
What’s in your handbag?
Mostly receipts! I actually downsized my bag in the hopes of reducing the amount of rubbish I hoard but it just means I cram more in! There are currently some wilted daisies in there as LJ spent about 15 minutes picking them at school pick-up yesterday! Thanks for that!! I would like to say I have some lippy etc but I’d be lying. Essentials are keys, phone and debit card.
What is your relationship with housework?
As I mentioned above, I used to hate housework and it would dominate my days. I always felt like I was fighting a losing battle. A few weeks ago I read all about KonMari and it has changed my life, honestly! I now do minimal housework as nothing seems to get into a mess. I am going to share my journey soon as I want everyone to be housework free too!!
How do you relax?
Sleep…. Haha um, I guess I watch tv. I haven’t properly relaxed in so long I have forgotten what it looks like. To be honest, if I relax I get a bit stressed – I prefer to be busy.
What’s the best parenting advice you have ever been given?
A fed baby is a happy baby. People will try and give your their opinions on breastfeeding or bottle feeding. All that matters is that baby has a full tummy so do what is best for you and your situation. I will give breastfeeding a go when this baby comes along but if I can’t do it (couldn’t with LJ due to milk allergies) I won’t stress about it.
For any new mums out there, what would you like to tell them?
Mum knows best – and that is YOU not your mum. If I had listened to other people then I would have very poorly children indeed. Instead, I trusted my instincts and pushed for an allergy diagnosis. If you feel something is wrong, don’t let anyone fob you off. Oh and also – there is NO SUCH THING as Colic. :-)
What makes you happy?
Right now when I see my girls chattering away with each other, playing nicely and being the best of friends. Knowing that they are happy and healthy is all I could ever want.
And finally, complete this sentence:
I am a great mum because…..
I actually asked Little G why and she replied because you love us. I am going to go with that. I love my children with every fibre of my being and that makes me the best mum to them. Everything I do is for them, they will always come first and I cannot wait for my love to grow for my new little one. I used to worry that I wouldn’t love LJ when she came along but now I know that what people say is right – your love grows with each child.
Thank you so much to Katy at What Katy Said for letting me turn the tables on her with her fantastic Real Mums series! I love Little G’s response as to why she’s a great mum – you can’t get better than that!
