Weekly Round Up – Week 8

Weekly Round Up – Week 8

It’s two weeks since we arrived back in Australia!  We love our new city so far and the apartment we’re renting.

When we lived in Australia previously it was in Sydney but this time around we’ve moved a couple of hours up the coast to Newcastle.

We felt that Newcastle would be a great option because it has everything we want in a city but on a much smaller scale.

We LOVED Sydney but felt it was a bit too busy and expensive for us but we still wanted to be close by as a lot of our friends live there.

We’re renting in the CBD at the moment while we explore the area and decide which suburb we want to move to permanently.  We rented a car for the first week so we could have a little look around and now we’ve finally bought a car hurray!

Our apartment has 2 bedrooms which means Miss M has her own room but Mini M is still in with us.  It isn’t ideal and he is a REALLY light sleeper which means every time Mr M turns over in bed or breaks into a snore, Mini wakes up.  Grr.  That said, it’s nice to be able to wake up to his smiley face every day.

We did intend to get a toddler bed for Miss M but she’s been happy so far in the middle of the double bed in her room.  We’ve pushed it against a wall and she sleeps in the middle and so far, so good.

So what have we been doing so far?

We’ve been walking through the city and getting to know where everything is. There are a few shops nearby, two supermarkets and quite a few cafes and restaurants.

Our apartment has an outdoor swimming pool so we’ve been making the most of that!  It also has a gym.  Um, haven’t been there yet.

Here is Miss M who insisted on ‘checking the pool temperature’ a million times.  She’s wearing her lovely new pink visor from Scunci who kindly sent it to us after hearing we had arrived in Australia.  It’s perfect for shielding her eyes and face from the sun.

They’re $9.95 and really stretchy and comfortable as made from soft elastic, leaving no hat hair!

We’re quite near to Darby Street which has a wide offering of cafes, restaurants and pretty boutiques to choose from.  We went to Zinc on Darby and were so impressed.  We ordered garlic bread, pizza and sweet potato fries to share between the 3 of us and there was so much food.  I’m pretty sure it was the best garlic bread I’ve ever eaten too – so soft and fluffy.

There is a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu as well as Kids options too and we found it a very family friendly place with lots of room for us, our double stroller and highchairs available.  There are also crayons and pictures for kids to colour and blankets available for cooler evenings.

There’s an outdoor seating area too and the staff were lovely and friendly.  We’ll definitely be going back.

I’ll be going back to Darby St soon to investigate all of the little shops – I did pop into one boutique called Betty Mim – cool name!  It stocks some beautiful homeware, gifts and clothes and I could have bought everything in the shop very easily.

We’re having a lot of fun so far discovering our new neighbourhood and finding our way around. Here’s a little round up my blogging week too:

•  My Most Read Post was – Breastfeeding Outfit Ideas from Next – I love Next, especially for work clothes and so happy that they also ship for free to Australia!

•  My Favourite Post was – my new weekly #ParentingPicks linky!  If you’re a blogger, link up any of your new and old Family themed posts here.  If you’re not a blogger, you might find some lovely new blogs to read here every week :)

•  My Favourite Archived Post – after some unsolicited parenting advice from an old lady in the lift this week, it reminded me of this one – Back Off Grandma!

•  We’ve been Reviewing – Le Reve Aromatherapy Candles and Goolie Goolie Dummies.

On my To Do list for next week

•  Get the kids settled in daycare as I start work the following week!

•  Get back on the weight loss wagon!  There isn’t a Weight Watchers group in the city and I’ll never commit to just doing it online at the moment so I need to have a think (and fast) about what I’m going to to get back on my weight loss mission.

•  Plan my birthday!  It’s in November and I can’t wait to catch up with friends and lots of wine :)

I’ve mentioned this before but these weekly round up posts are inspired by Aby’s #TheList linky at You Baby Me Mummy :)

Have you had a good week?

Disclosure: Miss M was sent the lovely visor from Scunci for free.  We paid for our delicious meal at Zinc. I am not related to Betty Mim but wish I was.

Aah I loved this post!! We went to Oz in 2002 (SO long ago now!!!) and absolutely loved it. Seeing that little high street just reminded me of St Kilda in Melbourne. Sounds like you’ve settled in really well :)

PS — I have tried the 5:2 diet twice now. The first time — I put on weight — and stopped after a few weeks. The second time, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and stayed on it for 6 months. In that time I’ve put on 8lb. I wasn’t overeating on the other days and — in an attempt to lose the weight I’d put on — shifted it to 4:3. Fasting THREE days a week and STILL no weight loss!!! I’ve shelved it now and am at Slimming World. Much easier and since I’ve been going, I’ve shed the weight I put on doing the 5:2 diet. Nice concept but not suitable for my body!! I spoke to the GP about it and he said it’s the body holding on to water in an attempt to protect itself. Arrgh!!!

Thanks for linking up with us at #TwinklyTuesday

    • 29th October 2015 / 7:15 pm

Ooh St Kilda is so lovely! And so many bakeries ha ha!! Argh ok that’s enough to put me off so thank you for your honesty – putting weight ON would be very very bad!! x

Sounds like you are really enjoying being back in Australia and settling in to your new home well. Love the photo of Miss M checking the pool temperature – how lovely to have an outdoor pool at your apartment. The food photos from Darby Street made me feel very hungry – especially that delicious-looking garlic bread. Good luck with getting the children settled into daycare and starting work. #twinklytuesday

It’s such a treat to have a pool to use – we’re making the most of it! Thank you so much x

    • 28th October 2015 / 9:22 am

      Thank you – we’re getting there! :)

  5. 28th October 2015 / 12:49 am

This looks like a very fun adventure! Australia is on our of places we are yet to visit, but would love to! Your food pictures just made me salivate a little, I think I need to eat! Looked fab!
My cousin did the 5:2 diet post baby, and lost all of the baby weight within weeks… I’m still on my weight loss mission…!! Lovely post.

    • 28th October 2015 / 9:23 am

Oh the food was good ha ha! You should definitely try and get here one day :)

    • 28th October 2015 / 9:24 am

Thank you so much and I had a bit of an auto pilot moment yesterday with the non-Tuesday post apologies! x

  7. Oh what a grand new adventure Mim! I would love to pack up and start over somewhere new but now isn’t the time for us sadly. This looks like a really nice place to live!

    • 27th October 2015 / 7:39 pm

Ah it’s such a huge thing to do – I’m never moving again though! x

  8. 27th October 2015 / 1:54 pm

I’ve lived in Sydney for a couple of years and felt the same as you. Wonderful, but busy and expensive especially with a family. I’ve also spent extended periods in Newcastle for work and I love that too. A great choice with little people. Have fun exploring and settling in – what an exciting time for you!

    • 27th October 2015 / 1:57 pm

Oh that’s brilliant that you’ve been here too! I love it in Newcastle so far :)

Welcome back to Australia. I think Newcastle is a fab spot to settle in.

    • 27th October 2015 / 11:09 am

Thank you so much Mandy!! We love it so far :)

  10. Megan
    27th October 2015 / 10:19 am

Wow! It looks gorgeous where you are settled! Newcastle is delightful! Yes I’ve done 5:2 (badly) but I did find it less ‘diety’ which I loved. As a food LOVER I’ve never been able to face a diet, so 5:2 was good as it’s just two days a week you have to ‘be good’ for!!!

    • 27th October 2015 / 10:29 am

Thanks Megan! That’s what I thought – I can probably cope with eating little on 2 days if I know I can go back to ‘normal’ on the others – as long as I don’t go too mad! :)

  11. 27th October 2015 / 12:38 am

Looks like you are settling in pretty well! I am so jealous! You’re so brave moving so far away!

I tried the 5:2 diet but I didn’t do it long enough as I felt I went for the wrong things and counted them as calories – A lot of people have had a successful weight losses with the plan though! x

    • 3rd November 2015 / 7:35 pm

Ah I’ve heard bad things about the 5:2 diet since too – thank you for sharing your experience! x

  12. 26th October 2015 / 10:40 pm

What an exciting adventure for you all and Darby street looks fabulous. Such a great atmosphere, very trendy looking. I hope you settle in quickly. Aby has also inspired me to write a post like this. She’s a clever and popular lady. #fartglitter

Thank you so much! And yes, she is ha ha! x

  13. 26th October 2015 / 8:32 pm

This all looks fabulous, especially your pool! What a long way away you are now – it looks like you’re settling in nicelyx #fartglitter

    • 26th October 2015 / 8:34 pm

Isn’t it weird – I’m having my Monday evening now and it’s morning for you – I’ll never get my head around the time difference :) x

  14. 26th October 2015 / 6:32 pm

Oooh, how exciting! I bet it’s great to finally have your own set of wheels for exploring. That restaurant looks ace. My mum did that diet and liked it. Think she lost quite a bit but it was short lived. Best of luck with it. Is it hot yet over there? This post has made me start to feel a bit excited about our big move and it’s still months away, lol.
Thanks so much for linking up to #fartglitter xxx

    • 26th October 2015 / 7:16 pm

I can’t wait to be able to get around more now yay! Ah that’s what I fear – that I won’t keep it up – I’m not the best at dieting but I did like WW. Hurray hurray I bet you’re excited! x

Mim. It know it will be hard work but I’m a little bit jealous of the excitement of it all. Do you think it’s Australia for ever now? Love your list x

    • 25th October 2015 / 8:41 pm

Oh it is exciting! Yes, forever – I can’t imagine ever emigrating again, I’m too tired ha ha! x

  18. 25th October 2015 / 7:06 pm

Love this post Mim!!! I have never been in Australia but it is a place that I would definitely want to go and visit. My first cousin lives there and he has invited us so many times that I should go but when Sienna is a little bit older I guess, otherwise that plane trip will be crazy!! I ‘m loving your photos!! Look at those dishes!! You made me so hungry now! LOL You will now be able to enjoy a good weather. That swimming pool looks amazing!! I miss those things. In Peru (where I’m from) most of the houses or flats have a swimming pool!! Miss a great weather!! British one is awful!I’m paying you a visit from#WeekendBlogShare :-) xxx

    • 25th October 2015 / 7:20 pm

Ooh you should definitely come one day – and we can have an Aussie meet up! The plane trip isn’t any fun but I tell myself ‘it’s just one day’ and it’s ok. Well, if you don’t count the jetlag too :) The weather here is the pull for me – I would stay in England in a heart beat if only it wasn’t so cooooooooold! x
