“My experience of Acupuncture to increase Fertility” is in collaboration with John Tsagaris.
I always knew from very early on that I wanted to be a mother and ideally, have children of my own. I would have two children. Either a boy and a girl or two boys. That was my plan, you know, when I was a 9 year old.
Mr M and I got married in 2011 and decided that we would like to try for a baby within a couple of years of that. We had done some travelling and had our fair share of wild nights out. After a few months of wedding bliss, started on our baby-making mission.
I started the month with an ovulation kit at the ready and ended it with a negative pregnancy test. The next month was the same, as was the next.
By that time, I was heading towards my mid 30s. I started to worry about the possibility that perhaps motherhood might not happen for me. Perhaps I could not conceive naturally…or at all.
The months went by and nothing happened. I saw my Doctor who, although was extremely sympathetic and kind, assured me that if I just relaxed, pregnancy would happen for me. Easier said than done and try as I might, I couldn’t come to accept that getting pregnant was not really in my control.
My experience of Acupuncture to increase Fertility
I was seeing a Chiropractor at the time for an ongoing spinal issue. She told me about her colleague who was an Acupuncturist who worked with women undergoing IVF treatment and she recommended I see her.
I felt a little foolish that I was complaining about not getting pregnancy after only a few months. Some women struggle for many years. I decided to make an appointment to talk to her and see if she had any suggestions.
More than anything, the process of me taking some control of my fertility into my own hands did help to relax me and I looked forward to our appointment.
My first appointment
At the app, she ran through my general health, what we were doing to try to conceive, you know, other than the obvious! She also talked in detail about my menstrual cycle so we could pin point the best times to TTC (try to conceive) and some supplements I could take to further increase my chances of that illusive BFP (big fat positive!) pregnancy test. Yes, I’m quite up on the lingo after spending so many months then on pregnancy forums.
After the consultation, I underwent my first acupuncture treatment with her. She placed needles at various points from my head to my toes. Apart from a couple of tingles, I didn’t feel a thing. I’m pretty scared of needles but I can honestly say it was not scary in the slightest.
I was left to relax on the bed for about 30 minutes and I think I even fell asleep. Well, I was relaxing already!
After that appointment, we scheduled for follow up acupuncture sessions every 2 weeks. Each session followed the same pattern. We chatted about how my cycle had played out, whether I was on track with my supplements (multivitamins and folic acid). Then the acupuncture session.
I chose not to ask her why she was placing the needles where she did. I didn’t feel the need to research it either. Just knowing that what she was doing had worked for so many other ladies was enough for me. I put my faith in her ability 100%. This positive thinking really helped with my relaxation. A side effect was that I also started sleeping better and looking after myself physically.
In June, Mr M and I had a belated honeymoon in Bali. It was a wonderful couple of weeks where we totally and utterly relaxed. We ate well and barely drank. We sunbathed, swam (in our private pool!) and slept like babies.
After we came home a week or so passed and 5 days before my period was due I felt compelled to do a pregnancy test. Sure enough, there was my BFP! I couldn’t quite believe it – I was PREGNANT. 3 weeks pregnant – very very early.
I confided the results to my Acupuncturist who was over the moon but kept me very grounded as it was such early days. Our acupuncture sessions continued, now focusing more on ‘strengthening’ the pregnancy. As the weeks went by and the baby bump grew, I finally had my wish of a healthy pregnancy and then a healthy, bouncing baby.
Was it down to the acupuncture?
I would wholeheartedly say YES it was. Whether or not it was the needles themselves that directly contributed to me conceiving, I can confidently say that it was the sessions and the faith I put in the Acupuncturist’s ability that helped me to relax and retain such positivity that I would get pregnant and that it was just a matter of time before I did.
Before I was introduced to acupuncture to increase fertility myself, I had no idea that it was even a method to consider. I have since researched this more. One of my favourite vloggers, Ruth Crilly at A Model Recommends, recently gave birth to her beautiful baby girl. I was so interested to read that that she had acupuncture to assist with her infertility issues.
Ruth had consultations with John Tsagaris, an acclaimed Chinese medical practitioner. He has over two decades experience specialising in health, beauty and wellbeing therapeutic interventions.
Ruth absolutely raves about her experience and quite rightly so, her baby is adorable!
With an Honours Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine with Human Bioscience, I can see why Ruth put her faith in his ability. At his clinic in Chelsea, his clients range from supermodels to Hollywood A-List actresses to ladies like me. You can find out more about the treatment he offers here as well as fertility acupuncture.
John says that the acupuncture for fertility treatments he offers enable the body’s energy network meridians to transmit biofeedback all over the body, to regulate the body’s responses. Chinese herbal medicine is often used as a part of the treatments. In the form of individual prescription of Chinese herbs (GM and sulphur-free and approved by UK regulations). I was offered a chinese herbal tea from my own acupuncturist. I can’t stomach tea unfortunately – herbal or not! That said, if I’d been trying to conceive for long enough, I would have been much more open to giving it a go too.
I will never truly know whether it was the acupuncture itself that led to me conceiving. Without giving it a go, I would have certainly continued feeling stressed and pessimistic about my chances. That would not have helped a thing. I do believe that infertility acupuncture sessions worked for me.
When I speak to friends now who are struggling to conceive, it’s the very first thing I recommend to the. If they ask for my advice.
Have you tried acupuncture to increase fertility or for any other reason? I would love to hear about your experience of it too!
