Acupuncture to Increase Fertility: My Experience

I always knew from very early on that I wanted to be a mother and ideally, have children of my own. I would have two children. Either a boy and a girl or two boys. That was my plan, you know, when I was a 9 year old.

Mr M and I got married in 2011 and decided that we would like to try for a baby within a couple of years of that. We had done some travelling and had our fair share of wild nights out. After a few months of wedding bliss, started on our baby-making mission.

In collaboration with John Tsagaris.

Acupuncture to increase Fertility - Love from Mim
My experience of Acupuncture to increase Fertility

I started the month with an ovulation kit at the ready and ended it with a negative pregnancy test. The next month was the same, as was the next.

By that time, I was heading towards my mid 30s. I started to worry about the possibility that perhaps motherhood might not happen for me. Perhaps I could not conceive naturally…or at all.
The months went by and nothing happened. I saw my Doctor who, although was extremely sympathetic and kind, assured me that if I just relaxed, pregnancy would happen for me. Easier said than done and try as I might, I couldn’t come to accept that getting pregnant was not really in my control.

My experience of Acupuncture to increase Fertility

I was seeing a Chiropractor at the time for an ongoing spinal issue. She told me about her colleague who was an Acupuncturist who worked with women undergoing IVF treatment and she recommended I see her.

I felt a little foolish that I was complaining about not getting pregnancy after only a few months. Some women struggle for many years. I decided to make an appointment to talk to her and see if she had any suggestions.

More than anything, the process of me taking some control of my fertility into my own hands did help to relax me and I looked forward to our appointment.

My first appointment

At the app, she ran through my general health, what we were doing to try to conceive, you know, other than the obvious! She also talked in detail about my menstrual cycle so we could pin point the best times to TTC (try to conceive) and some supplements I could take to further increase my chances of that illusive BFP (big fat positive!) pregnancy test. Yes, I’m quite up on the lingo after spending so many months then on pregnancy forums.

After the consultation, I underwent my first acupuncture treatment with her. She placed needles at various points from my head to my toes. Apart from a couple of tingles, I didn’t feel a thing. I’m pretty scared of needles but I can honestly say it was not scary in the slightest.

I was left to relax on the bed for about 30 minutes and I think I even fell asleep. Well, I was relaxing already!

Next steps

After that appointment, we scheduled for follow up acupuncture sessions every 2 weeks. Each session followed the same pattern. We chatted about how my cycle had played out, whether I was on track with my supplements (multivitamins and folic acid). Then the acupuncture session.

I chose not to ask her why she was placing the needles where she did. I didn’t feel the need to research it either. Just knowing that what she was doing had worked for so many other ladies was enough for me. I put my faith in her ability 100%. This positive thinking really helped with my relaxation. A side effect was that I also started sleeping better and looking after myself physically.

In June, Mr M and I had a belated honeymoon in Bali. It was a wonderful couple of weeks where we totally and utterly relaxed. We ate well and barely drank. We sunbathed, swam (in our private pool!) and slept like babies.

After we came home a week or so passed and 5 days before my period was due I felt compelled to do a pregnancy test. Sure enough, there was my BFP! I couldn’t quite believe it – I was PREGNANT. 3 weeks pregnant – very very early.

I confided the results to my Acupuncturist who was over the moon but kept me very grounded as it was such early days. Our acupuncture sessions continued, now focusing more on ‘strengthening’ the pregnancy. As the weeks went by and the baby bump grew, I finally had my wish of a healthy pregnancy and then a healthy, bouncing baby.

Was it down to the acupuncture?

I would wholeheartedly say YES it was. Whether or not it was the needles themselves that directly contributed to me conceiving, I can confidently say that it was the sessions and the faith I put in the Acupuncturist’s ability that helped me to relax and retain such positivity that I would get pregnant and that it was just a matter of time before I did.

Before I was introduced to acupuncture to increase fertility myself, I had no idea that it was even a method to consider. I have since researched this more. One of my favourite vloggers, Ruth Crilly at A Model Recommends, recently gave birth to her beautiful baby girl. I was so interested to read that she had acupuncture to assist with her infertility issues.

Ruth had consultations with John Tsagaris, an acclaimed Chinese medical practitioner. He has over two decades of experience specialising in health, beauty and wellbeing therapeutic interventions.

Ruth absolutely raves about her experience and quite rightly so, her baby is adorable!

About John

With an Honours Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine with Human Bioscience, I can see why Ruth put her faith in his ability. At his clinic in Chelsea, his clients range from supermodels to Hollywood A-List actresses to ladies like me. You can find out more about the treatment he offers here as well as fertility acupuncture.

John says that the acupuncture for fertility treatments he offers enable the body’s energy network meridians to transmit biofeedback all over the body, to regulate the body’s responses. Chinese herbal medicine is often used as a part of the treatments. In the form of individual prescription of Chinese herbs (GM and sulphur-free and approved by UK regulations). I was offered a chinese herbal tea from my own acupuncturist. I can’t stomach tea unfortunately – herbal or not! That said, if I’d been trying to conceive for long enough, I would have been much more open to giving it a go too.

I will never truly know whether it was the acupuncture itself that led to me conceiving. Without giving it a go, I would have certainly continued feeling stressed and pessimistic about my chances. That would not have helped a thing. I do believe that infertility acupuncture sessions worked for me.

When I speak to friends now who are struggling to conceive, it’s the very first thing I recommend to the. If they ask for my advice.

I would like to share my personal experience in this field. Some time ago I was ready to give everything for the opportunity to become a mother. Biologically I am now my baby mother. I have no eggs and due to cancer and I lost my uterus. I had no variants. Since I am from Hungary surrogacy is illegal here. We started looking for variants abroad, here a cost varies greatly. After reviewing a large number of clinics, we contacted a clinic They offered an ‘all inclusive’ package that we were very happy with, as we were only focused on winning. And it is much cheaper than somewhere else and we were surprised with conditions and attitude to us. After 1.5 years we became parents. And it is pricelessly. In such cases her herbs is a real solution to become a happy mum.

As a registered massage therapist feels good if any one share their good thought about Acupuncture Therapy. Many people who do not believe in alternate medicine can take lesson from this article. Good Post .

The “happen” comments from your doctor are going to seem familiar to a lot of women. It’s nice that you were able to meet your goal of conception.

This idea is so interesting to me. I am so intrigued at the places that they chose to do the acupuncture that treated your fertility challenges. I will have to share this with my neighbor who has struggled with infertility for the last 9 years. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you – I love it too, despite being a bit fearful of needles :) The pros certainly outweigh that for me.

It really did – for more than fertility too – I’m a big believer in keeping an open mind and in positive thinking :)

Never heard of acupuncture to help with fertility problems before. My instant thought is how painful it is to have needles sticking in ya. I am a big wimp when it comes to needles and although I would be tempted to try this I’m terrified I’ll be in pain.
Although sounds like you had a great relaxing experience and it seemed to work.

I am very very scared of needles and injections but I promise that it isn’t anything like those and nothing to be worried about :) I’m a wimp too :) I think it’s all about finding a practitioner that you trust too. x

I meant to say great experience with acupuncture and IVF…but yes it was for infertility obviously. :)

I had great success with acupuncture and infertility. I had acupuncture twice a week during the period that I was growing my eggs. Then I had it the day before my embryo transfer and the day after. I conceived two sets of twins with the embryos that were made with those eggs. I truly believe the acupuncture improved the blood flow to my reproductive organs and improved the quality of my uterine lining as well as the quality of my eggs. Not to mention it does make you feel so relaxed and gives you the feeling of being proactive and like you are giving yourself a better chance.

Oh that’s so wonderful and congrats to you! That’s exactly how I felt, like I was taking matters into my hands – as much as I could :)
