5 Autumn Style Ideas for Busy Mums on the Go

Be honest, what do you wear when you’re working from home? PJs? Activewear? Or business attire? It really doesn’t matter if you’re comfortable, productive and get the job done, right?

For me, it’s smart casual. I want to relax at home but at the same time I want to feel like a pro – because I’m at work. Plus, there are times when I need to nip out for a meeting, make a Skype call or do the school run.

So, I push aside the temptation to wear slippers every day and when I get up and get dressed, I’m work-ready.

However now I don’t work in an office every day, I spend way less money on clothing and footwear. Much of my wardrobe crosses over from weekday to weekend and it just seems to last longer. A lot of that has to do with the choices I make in terms of style and quality.

Now I buy a few key pieces at the start of every season to make my existing capsule-style wardrobe work for the next few months.

As we’re heading into autumn, I’ve been doing this recently. The heat in NSW hasn’t moved on yet but we are getting more rainy and cloudy days.

Here are some of my tips on autumn style ideas for work from home mums that are both practical and stylish.

5 Ideas for Autumn Style for Mums

1. Invest in Layers

Lightweight layers can be worn all year round to build an outfit up for autumn/winter or down for spring/summer.

I invest in good quality basics like singlets and t-shirts from. They pair well with skinny jeans, pants and skirts and in the cooler months, can help with adding warmth while not bulking up an outfit.

2. Be Ready to Run

There are some days when I’m so engrossed in work that when my school run alarm sounds, it still feels like 10am! These sneakers are always ready to throw on and race to the car and they team well with almost everything in my wardrobe.

The soft Pink is a lighter alternative to autumns’ typical maroon and easily stretches throughout the year. I’ll also add that these sneakers feel just as comfortable as slippers, just in case you were wondering! But you know, they look a lot more ‘put together’.

Sneakers are the perfect shoe for a busy mum and can easily transfer from work to school run to a weekend playdate.

I always recommend getting out of the house at least once during the day to fellow work from home mums as it breaks up the day so well. It’s so easy to sit behind your laptop for hours and not move once. Maybe it’s just me but if I have shoes on, I’m more inclined to get up, walk around and even go for a walk outside.

Ankle boots are also a great choice for autumn as they’re not too heavy and work wonderfully with skinny jeans or a dress.

As a mum, I am always inspired by organisations that genuinely give back to the community.

3. Embrace Denim

Jeans can be a staple in many work from home mum’s wardrobes and whilst they’re not always suitable for a corporate setting, working from home is the perfect time to embrace them.

Darker jeans in blue, black or khaki are the perfect choice for autumn and can easily be dressed up with a button down blouse or down with a plain t-shirt.

Ripped denim is often a no-no in the office but working from home gives you the flexibility to add your own take on what’s acceptable!

4. Think Twice Before Purchasing

When I made the transition from working in an office to working from home, for a while I continued to purchase “office wear” that was completely unnecessary.

Working from home can be really budget friendly – so make the most of that! Invest only in pieces that you will wear that are comfortable, well-made and make you feel great.

All that said, if getting into a work-ready mindset means dressing up, then do it. It’s all about making your wardrobe work for you and what you are trying to achieve at work.

These Pele low heels work wonderfully in dressing up an outfit instantly but are also easy to wear given the block heel.

5. Create a Capsule Wardrobe

As mentioned before, my wardrobe crosses over between weekday and weekend often. There are some staples that just work so well for both such as skinny jeans, basic dresses and smarter loungewear.

A capsule wardrobe is a limited number of essential items that can be mixed and matched. My own is quite limited in terms of colour and I tend to wear a lot of black, white, grey, pink, khaki and navy. You might be the same or you might like to inject more pops of colours – just think about investing in items that are timeless, rather than high-fashion, and will mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. The pieces I buy now are better quality and long-lasting.

Some gorgeous colours for autumn are mustard, maroon and olive green: muted and flattering for most.

So, there are my top five autumn style ideas for mums who work from home.

My number one tip is to wear what works for you. If it makes you feel great, confident and ultimately more productive then success will follow!

Love the style of the Annabel ankle boot, would be so versatile.

  2. Jordana Hodgetts
    / 10:20 pm

The Prague ankle boots are “mint as” they’d be my choice “for reals”
Having two “sprogs” under two means that this mum needs something more substantial than “jandals” for Autumn/Winter. Especially since a day in my life includes stopping my toddler running headfirst into the “chilly bin”, stopping him spilling “twink” all over his new knitted “jersey”, all of which leaves him a “wee” bit “stroppy” from being “flat tack” all “arvo”!
As you can see, like Merchant 1948 I’m also a kiwi who can now be found over this side of the ditch in Oz!

Translation: I love the Prague ankle boots. Now that I no longer have swollen pregnancy feet, I need some practical yet stylish shoes to get me through Autumn and Winter. The Prague ankle boots tick all those boxes!

  27. Angela Gawne
    / 7:20 am

I love the Rosanne casual flats. I love a pair of shoes that are easy to throw on, so this shoe looks like a quick, easy and comfortable shoe to be able to do that at a good price point and looks good too.

  28. Sarah J
    / 9:52 pm

I’m a mum heading back to work,
So sad I can only smirk,
Back to work in comfort and style,
    Something i haven’t had for a while;

Form Merchant 1948 there’s so many to choose,
    They’re all perfect looking shoes,
I’d pick the ‘Sorrento ankle boot’,
Business in the front party in the back,

  29. Sarahmary
    / 11:50 am

I love heels but I’m quite unco, so my pick is Wistful long boot because of the thick soles heels and I love wearing boots in winter

  30. Karli Hose
    / 1:02 am

Love the Federation Ankle Boots, perfect for Autumn (and Winter)! Practical, yet super stylish!

  31. Amanda S
    / 10:39 pm

Federation ankle boot for me too. Autumn gets me back in jeans and as I am so short I have to have a heel to wear jeans.

  32. Gayle Vos
    / 8:21 pm

I’m really taken with the Paulista ankle boot, perfect for jeans and a light jumper for the Autumn weather plus stylish enough to compliment and baby doll dress

  33. Nicole
    / 5:20 pm

Gee gee stud casual sneaker in white. It’s practical for multiple occasions, can be worn while running around all day in the house but able to be dressed up to step outside too!

  34. Jessie Chibber
    / 4:19 pm

Federation ankle boot – Super practical, but with all of the style and elegance you could only dream of being everyday.

  35. Angela M
    / 1:24 pm

The Paulista ankle boot looks so comfortable. And it’s so stylish.

  36. Kylie Embury
    / 12:46 pm

For me it’s the Willow ankle boots! Conformable boots are a must – whether it’s for the school run, shopping, eating out with family or standing in the cold watching my son play soccer! These are exactly what I’ve been looking for! I LOVE the khaki!

    • Kylie Embury
      / 11:49 am

Haha! That should be “comfortable” boots!

  37. Maria
    / 11:32 am

The Paulista Ankle Boots would look fabulous with a pair of jeans which I live in come Autumn and Winter.

  38. Lauren Hunt
    / 9:43 am

The Willow ankle boot in Burgundy would make all my Autumn dreams come true. As I jump around with my son in fallen leaves, they would be my everlasting shoe. Taking me from morning to night, the picturesque colours would blend in to become such a highlight.

  39. Jacky B
    / 9:36 pm

The Aiofe dress low, looks incredibly smart, unusual and comfortable: perfect for a Queensland autumn.

  40. Anthea Cornish
    / 7:43 pm

Federation ankle boots are adorable. They are practical, stylish and a must for the fashionable girl who has good taste.

  41. Laurinda Kelly
    / 3:09 pm

100% couldn’t go past the Shelley Dress Court in Baby Pink. I live in the north QLD tropics so an open style shoe is the go to, however this sometimes means at the expense of style + practicality. BUT BOOOOM here is my perfect shoe with a high enough heel to project me to the same height as my daughter again & a wide sturdy heel so I don’t stumble from sleep deprivation. May not be going out on a wild weekend but I would wear these with pride to my mums lunches..

  42. tracy wedding
    / 7:57 pm

    love the Paulista ankle boot

  43. Jane Gardam
    / 9:49 pm

They are all beautiful shoes, but would dearly love some neat casual shoes to just pop on to go to the shops when I don’t feel like dressing up too much but still want to look good, I think the Gee gee stud casual sneaker would suit that job perfectly. May have to hide them from my daughter though!

  44. Nyssa
    / 7:36 pm

I love the Willow ankle boot! I like that it is a fairly androgynous shoe and I love that it has an aged look.

  45. Jill-Anne
    / 1:29 pm

What an amazing stylish collection. I love the ZINC CASUAL flat in brilliant bright PINK … Perfect with my PINK gear as I walk the ‘Mothers Day Classic’ for my 2nd year, raising funds for breast cancer research. This year I hope to walk the 4.5km a little faster than I did last year, immediate post surgery.

  46. melinda roche
    / 8:28 am

I have fallen in love with the Deuce sneakers in this post – they look super comfortable…And I LOOOVE the soft pink color…

  47. Annelies
    / 8:06 am

Wow! I’ve never heard of this brand before and I was pleasantly surprised! I like the Affirm Dress Low but I think the Paulista Ankle boot would be more useful to me. As you said, ankle boots are great!

  48. Lauren barnes
    / 6:29 am

Stella casual sneakers, to be able to keep up with kids at the local park on an Autumn day in style without blisters and look like a super mum!

  49. Rachel K
    / 4:32 am

When I was a little girl I asked Santa for a “Pretty in Pink” Barbie. It was my dream present so you can imagine my excitement when she actually turned up under the Christmas tree. I was the happiness little girl on the planet until the moment I wanted to put her pretty pink high heels on and I couldn’t find them or the box she came in.
These days my brother and I call my mother the “Queen of Clean” and yes you guessed it, in her quest to have a super neat and tidy lounge room for Christmas she had collected the box, including shoes, and incinerated it with all the used Christmas wrapping paper.
So for Barbie’s sake I’d love the Malibu High heel which looks exactly like her original ones so I can take them to Mum and say, “Look what I’ve got Mum, I found Barbie’s Shoes!” However because I’m not that cruel, suffer from osteoarthritis, can’t walk in heels anymore and for my own practical purposes, I’d love the Bijou dress flat!

  50. Kate
    / 9:13 pm

Oh my goodness! So much delicious tootsie wear. I actually do want them all, but I’m quite enchanted by the affirm. Preppy but fresh and sleek and by golly they look comfortable! In the nudie peachy shade. Loviiiiiiiing!

  51. Sonia Chang
    / 9:04 pm

Federation Anke Boots in Taupe colour is one of my favourite shoes from Merchant website this autumn season. It’s luxurious, simple with timeless elegance designs with premium leather materials for completing personal fashion statement. I just adore Federation Anke Boots thick heels comfort and versatility . Truly fabulous shoes to match my wool skirt, wide leg pants and skinny jeans.

  52. Mel
    / 8:41 pm

The Early Long Boot would be so chic for winter!

  53. Kasey Evans
    / 8:20 pm

For Autumn I’d love a pair of Stella Casual Sneakers as they look so stylish, comfortable, slick and so damn cool ?

  54. Louise M
    / 5:46 pm

I’d love the Julie ankle boot, it would go with pretty much all of my outfits!

  55. Samara McRae
    / 4:03 pm

The Cristiano Long Boots. They are the perfect shoe for the cooler weather. They would look amazing with dresses, skirts, tights and jeans and would easily take me through the changing cooler seasons.

  56. Lolo W
    / 2:07 pm

It’s the Lucy Lou Casual Sneaker for me this autumn: stylish (neutral tones, smart-casual look), comfortable (“dualcore footbed for targeted support”; breathable siding – not too stuffy or heavy – ideal for Queensland’s warmer autumn weather), durable (leather/lycra heal counter), and versatile (slip on or lace up, great for a quick errand or a casual outing, easy to match with my existing ‘capsule’ of clothes and accessories). My feet are already tingling with excitement at the possibility of getting into these brilliant shoes!

  57. May
    / 1:37 pm

In theory in autumn I’d love the Cristiano long boot
But I live in CQ where it’s hot, so that choice is moot
Not to mention, my “elephant legs” (a name given to me by my Pop)
So that boot wouldn’t reach my knee, at my ankle it’d stop.

The silky mid heel is so pretty in pink
But I stopped wearing heels in the early 2000s, I think.
Not to mention, I am now a mother of two
A cute little preppie, and a 6mo old too.

But that doesn’t mean I am not spoilt for choice
“To the flats section” I say, certainty in my voice.
Not to mention, the sandals section will also be great
Because in CQ, the heat always stays on late

The Peony Casual Flat, so pink with a shimmer
The Lucille casual sandal, because black makes you look slimmer,
Not to mention The Deelo canvas casual sneaker, so happy and yellow
The Mellie casual sandal, but perhaps maybe not for chasing after my young fellow.

But in the end I believe the Peony Casual Flat is the winner
A quick slip in and they’re on, no hassle I’m no mama beginner
Not to mention, as a mother of boys I like some things exceptionally girly
It’ll be perfection worn with a flowy skirt, a nice shirt, and my hair down all curly

  58. Isabel
    / 11:12 am

I love the brown boots you’re wearing in the photos, they look lovely!

  59. Sarah Middleton
    / 10:34 am

Hi Mim, such fantastic advice put in a way that was a great read. I’ve heard about capsule wardrobes before and this article has perked the idea back up. I might go and start a wardrobe cull!

Looking at the Merchant website, omg shoe envy! I think what I really need is some good quality casual flats. Something black that can be dressed up and down. So many options…

  60. Dani
    / 8:35 am

That was fabulous advice! I’m by no means a fashion kind of person but I loved the simplicity of your wardrobe choices so much and the timely reminder that I’m not doing myself favours by working in my pyjamas!

As part of the competition, I’m entering because I’d love to up my game in how I present myself and the pride I take I myself even when working home alone. Nice shoes would be the first step toward this (come on, I’m using puns here! That’s gotta count for something). I adore the Aoife Dress Low in size 11 Rose Quartz! They would go so nicely with a variety of outfits ❤️

  61. Paula H
    / 8:26 am

The Orchid long boot would definitely keep my pins warm this Winter (and hide my cankles hahaha)

  62. Bron
    / 7:59 am

A new pair of boots would be just the thing! Lovely shoes.

  63. Victoria
    / 7:47 am

The Federation ankle boot in taupe is destined to be my one-stop-shop shoe for winter! I swear my heart raced a little quicker when I saw it. Could this be love at first sight?

  64. Lesley Olariu
    / 7:45 am

The pink sneakers get my vote, cute and comfy, versatile and PINK?

  65. / 7:09 am

Great post Mim! Love the suggestions! And loooooove the Federation ankle boot ???.

  66. Erica
    / 6:40 am

It’s a toss up between the Wistful long boot or the Aoife dress low shoes in dusty pink.

    Wonderful shoes, great giveaway.

    Thank you for the opportunity!

  67. Rachael
    / 6:10 am

Oh my goodness it was hard to choose but I do love the Annabel ankle boot, you can’t go wrong with a stylish boot for your wardrobe ?

  68. Dhanya Samuel
    / 11:00 pm

The Early Long Boot….I have been dreaming of owning a pair of long boots for the coming season so it would be great to win a pair.

  69. Carolyn King
    / 10:28 pm

Love the Federation Ankle Boots. They are so versatile and can be worn with anything and all year round. Great value for money as they will last for years as well.

  70. Karina Lee
    / 9:47 pm

The Willow ankle boot in burgundy would be lovely this Autumn..my feet will fit in beautifully with the autumn colours!

  71. Kate
    / 9:33 pm

I am the worst at fashion… like THE WORST! I so need one of those ‘capsule wardrobes’ but if I do it myself, it will end up being leggings and a Tshirt with a stain on it! LOL But I think the Stella Casual sneaker would go quite well with that ensemble.. don’t you think?

  72. Amanda K
    / 9:07 pm

The Black Federation Ankle Boots would be the perfect boot to ‘step out’ in this autumn- not too high or too low. Finding the perfect pair of boots seems like an impossible task every year, but I sure have fun trying! These babies look like they might just fit the bill! :)

  73. Loz
    / 8:42 pm

I would have to go the Paulista ankle boot (black combo) for practical and comfort reasons, but still with a little bling to make me feel that bit fancy. I love love love the Federation ankle boot but unfortunately I can imagine breaking my ankle if I wore heels to school drop off!!

  74. Amanda Giffard
    / 8:34 pm

This busy mummy’s tired feet would love to be spoilt and dressed up a bit in the gorgeous “Socha ankle boot”! They are a “step up” from my usual flats, and still casual enough for the school run! (or dressy enough for a very rare, and I mean rare date night!)

  75. Bron
    / 8:03 pm

I love the Federation ankle boot. I always love to work tan into my capsule wardrobe because it’s so versatile. I also don’t wear heels and has a young student ask me recently “Why aren’t you wearing high heels? Everyone else is!” ? So a modest low-heel is now on my list!
