For me, it’s smart casual. I want to relax at home but at the same time I want to feel like a pro – because I’m at work. Plus, there are times when I need to nip out for a meeting, make a Skype call or do the school run.
So, I push aside the temptation to wear slippers every day and when I get up and get dressed, I’m work-ready.
However now I don’t work in an office every day, I spend way less money on clothing and footwear. Much of my wardrobe crosses over from weekday to weekend and it just seems to last longer. A lot of that has to do with the choices I make in terms of style and quality.
Now I buy a few key pieces at the start of every season to make my existing capsule-style wardrobe work for the next few months.
As we’re heading into autumn, I’ve been doing this recently. The heat in NSW hasn’t moved on yet but we are getting more rainy and cloudy days.
Here are some of my tips on autumn style ideas for work from home mums that are both practical and stylish.

5 Autumn Style Ideas for Busy Mums on the Go
1. Invest in Layers
Lightweight layers can be worn all year round to build an outfit up for autumn/winter or down for spring/summer.
I invest in good quality basics like singlets and t-shirts from. They pair well with skinny jeans, pants and skirts and in the cooler months, can help with adding warmth while not bulking up an outfit.
2. Be Ready to Run
There are some days when I’m so engrossed in work that when my school run alarm sounds, it still feels like 10am! These sneakers are always ready to throw on and race to the car and they team well with almost everything in my wardrobe.
The soft Pink is a lighter alternative to autumns’ typical maroon and easily stretches throughout the year. I’ll also add that these sneakers feel just as comfortable as slippers, just in case you were wondering! But you know, they look a lot more ‘put together’.
Sneakers are the perfect shoe for a busy mum and can easily transfer from work to school run to a weekend playdate.
I always recommend getting out of the house at least once during the day to fellow work from home mums as it breaks up the day so well. It’s so easy to sit behind your laptop for hours and not move once. Maybe it’s just me but if I have shoes on, I’m more inclined to get up, walk around and even go for a walk outside.
Ankle boots are also a great choice for autumn as they’re not too heavy and work wonderfully with skinny jeans or a dress.
Both the Deuce sneakers and Ankle Boots above are from Merchant 1948, part of the Overland Footwear Group. There are 60 stores in New Zealand and Australia across Merchant 1948 and Mi Piaci brands as well as a website that showcases not only their beautiful range but also how their footwear is handcrafted and the company’s ethos of being an organisation that gives back.
Their own charity, the Young Hearts Project helps young people who are struggling with life’s challenges and was founded in 2014 by Overland Director, Shane Anselmi. Shane will soon be announcing their Australian giving partner, following the success of launching the project in New Zealand. Sign up to be the first to know here. SIGN UP LINK
Merchant doesn’t do fast-fashion or poor-quality products or service. Shopping there is a fulfilling experience on and offline and it’s very comforting to know that when you spend your money on their range, it’s going to assist in helping the next generation to live a better life. As a mum, I am always inspired by organisations that genuinely give back to the community.
3. Embrace Denim
Jeans can be a staple in many work from home mum’s wardrobes and whilst they’re not always suitable for a corporate setting, working from home is the perfect time to embrace them.
Darker jeans in blue, black or khaki are the perfect choice for autumn and can easily be dressed up with a button down blouse or down with a plain t-shirt.
Ripped denim is often a no-no in the office but working from home gives you the flexibility to add your own take on what’s acceptable!
4. Think Twice Before Purchasing
When I made the transition from working in an office to working from home, for a while I continued to purchase “office wear” that was completely unnecessary.
Working from home can be really budget friendly – so make the most of that! Invest only in pieces that you will wear that are comfortable, well-made and make you feel great.
All that said, if getting into a work-ready mindset means dressing up, then do it. It’s all about making your wardrobe work for you and what you are trying to achieve at work.
These Pele low heels work wonderfully in dressing up an outfit instantly but are also easy to wear given the block heel.
5. Create a Capsule Wardrobe
As mentioned before, my wardrobe crosses over between weekday and weekend often. There are some staples that just work so well for both such as skinny jeans, basic dresses and smarter loungewear.
A capsule wardrobe is a limited number of essential items that can be mixed and matched. My own is quite limited in terms of colour and I tend to wear a lot of black, white, grey, pink, khaki and navy. You might be the same or you might like to inject more pops of colours – just think about investing in items that are timeless, rather than high-fashion, and will mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. The pieces I buy now are better quality and long-lasting.
Some gorgeous colours for autumn are mustard, maroon and olive green: muted and flattering for most.
So, there are my top five autumn style ideas for mums who work from home.
My number one tip is to wear what works for you. If it makes you feel great, confident and ultimately more productive then success will follow!
