What are Planner Stickers?

Planner stickers are used in paper or digital planners, as diary stickers, scrapbooks, bullet journals and notebooks.

They can be:

  • pre-cut, kiss-cut stickers as great planner decoration ideas
  • printable stickers that can be printed and cut at home
  • digital stickers for digital planners

They come in all sorts of designs and themes, such as productivity stickers, weekly or monthly themed kits, seasonal ones, inspirational quotes, and functional icons like checklists and appointment labels.

You’ll never be short of custom planner sticker ideas when you know how to decorate your planner and you could also learn how to make stickers at home. Keeping reading!

3 Awesome Benefits of Making Planner Stickers at Home:

Here are some of the wonderful pros when you learn how to create planner stickers yourself:

1. They can be Customized

When making your own DIY planner sticker sheets, you’ll learn how to use planner stickers to customize your planner according to your own needs.

You can choose the designs, colors, and planner sticker sizes that suit your planner – such as Erin Condren or Happy Planner sticker sizes. Plus, you can create stickers that are super fun and unique to you.

Check out the Erin Condren range here and the Happy Planner range here.

2. You’ll Save Money

Making your own planner stickers, rather than buying pre-made ones, can really save you money. I don’t know about you but my sticker-buying habit was a little out of control before I started making my own!

When you make your own planner stickers at home, you can use materials you already such as sticker paper and a color printer.

3. You’ll get Creative!

Making your own planner stickers is a really fun, creative hobby to let your creative light shine. You get to enjoy experimenting with designing different stickers and creating stickers that aren’t typically available online or in the shops.

How to Make Planner Stickers at Home and Avoid Making Mistakes

I’ve been teaching people how to make stickers at home since 2016 and here are three myths that people get wrong about making stickers to sell and for myself:

1. You think you need expensive tools

Nope! Of course, if you have a cutting machine to make stickers, or you want to invest in one, that’s great! A cutting machine will give you really clean-cut stickers that look professional and it makes sticker cutting quick and easy.

But if you’re only making stickers for yourself, all you need is a computer or laptop, color printer, design software and sticker paper.

2. You think it will take too long

Only at first while you’re learning – but then you’ll see how fast and fun the sticker-making process can be!

You can also save a lot of time by using done-for-you, pre-made sticker templates or downloading free printable designs online. Get my templates here in Secret Sticker Society.

3. You think your stickers won’t be good enough

I get it – you want to create perfect stickers that you’re really proud of. Whether they’re for you or to share with others or sell. Check this post for how to start a sticker business.

The quality of your DIY planner stickers can be just as good as store-bought ones though – I know this as I see the high quality of my student’s stickers every day.

When you follow a process to make high-quality stickers have the right materials and techniques, you can create stickers that are professional-looking with ease.

Let’s move on to how to make printable planner stickers or printed ones.

How to Make Planner Stickers at Home

1. Get the Right Sticker Making Tools for DIY Planner Stickers

Firstly, to make your own DIY stickers for planners, you’ll need to invest in a great cutting machine and software to make planner stickers at home.

Or you can simply cut your stickers with scissors or a craft knife.

I recommend either the Silhouette or Cricut and I design my own stickers using Silhouette Studio or Cricut Design Space. All of my students use these as a planner sticker maker.

You can buy a Silhouette Portrait here and you can buy a Cricut here or here.

Cricut Makers and Explore Airs are perfect for planner stickers

Silhouette and Cricut machines and software are both art and sticker design software to design your own planner stickers and a sticker cutting machine to cut them after they’re printed.

Once you have created a planner sticker template once, you can also reuse it many times. For example, I have created a basic Weekly Kit template and simply change up the colors and patterns to create a whole new kit!

2. Learn How to Design Planner Stickers

To start with how to design stickers for planner pages, open up either Silhouette Software or Cricut Design Space and you can follow their instructions to create sticker shapes.

I created this video to show you how to make stickers in Silhouette Studio but I teach this software and Cricut Design Space in my professional sticker making courses.

Remember, you can also sign up for my eCourse where I teach you the step-by-step guide to make, print and cut a multitude for bullet journal fans, paper planner lovers, and even scrapbookers.

Here’s the sticker-making overview:

First, measure up to work out what size you want each sticker to be and then change the measurements of your stickers in the software so that they will exactly fit.

Next, add colour and patterns to your stickers to make them unique!

I love to design my stickers to make my planner pretty and also to stay more organized. All of the ones I design can be found in my Etsy store, Stickers By Mim.

3. Learn How to Print Planner Stickers

When it comes to how to print own stickers, I don’t know if there’s a best printer for stickers as such – so many will work just fine.

The best printer for sticker printing might depend on if you want to use an Ink Jet or Laser printer. I’m currently using a Canon Pixma inkjet and it’s doing a great job.

If you have found the best printer for printing planner stickers, share in the comments!

When you know how to print stickers for planner pages, you can move to the next step.

4. Find the Best Sticker Paper for You

Want to know what kind of sticker paper do Etsy shops use? I share my unicorn premium matte sticker paper with you in this sticker making kit!

It’s the best sticker paper for planner stickers I have used and has 5-star feedback from my customers.

Sticker printer paper isn’t cheap so if you’re on a tight budget, you can always print your own stickers on blank paper and use glue. It’s time-consuming and a bit messy though!

However, it’s one option for how to make stickers without sticker paper.

5. Cut Them Out!

If you’re making stickers at home for yourself, you can cut them with a cutting machine, scissors or a craft knife.

In my course I teach you how to cut planner stickers at home – and I share the mistakes I made in the early days so you can skip them.

Most printables sticker kits include paid or free printable planner stickers with cut files, as mentioned above. Some might have specific printable planner stickers for Cricut or Silhouettes but most can be cut with either, or by hand.

I send my printables in a Zip file with instructions on how to cut stickers. After you have unzipped the file, you’ll see it contains the following formats: Planner sticker PDF, PNG (for Cricut), JPG or FREE Silhouette Studio file showing cut lines.

It’s easy to print the bought or free printable planner stickers PDF version and cut them out with scissors however I like to open the Silhouette version and print from there. I can then use my Silhouette portrait to cut the stickers using the cut file provided from whoever I’ve got the sticker files from.
