Second Baby Essential Products – everything you need to be prepared!

As a lover of lists (do you love lists too?) I have put together the below list of Second Baby Essential Products to help you get organised if you’re expecting your second baby. (contains affiliate links)

Hint: it’s much smaller than when I was getting the house ready for my first baby!

Second Baby Essential Products - Love from Mim What to buy for a new baby

The below is in no order of importance because we think it’s all pretty essential – we just need to move to the next stage now and start actually getting these things into the house! This post contains affiliate links.

Second Baby Essential Products

1.  Nappies and Wipes

We used disposable nappies with both of my babies. Our favourites were Huggies and Pampers. You can start to buy these gradually during your weekly shops to save on splurging in one go. For wipes, we tend to use either Huggies or the supermarket’s own ones.

2.  Co-Sleeper

I loved the Fisher Price Rock & Play Sleeper. My babies had acid reflux so the slightly elevated sleeping position was ideal for them.

We loved the Fisher Price Rock n Play Sleeper for both of our babies!

Plus it can fold up so travels really well or you can put it away when not in use, move around the house etc.

3.  Swaddles & Blankets

We loved the SwaddleMe swaddles. To help my babies sleep better, we ‘double swaddled’ them in a muslin square with the SwaddleMe on top.

4.  Double Stroller

We had an iCandy Peach stroller and I bought the adapters needed to convert it into a double for the second baby. I’ve reviewed the iCandy stroller here.

5.  Breast Pump

I’m used the Medela Swing Breast Pump with both of my babies.

Medela Swing Breast Pump

The Medela Swing Breast Pump was my favourite for both babies!

I had supply issues from day 1 with my first and so I expressed milk after each feed regularly from the start. I then used the pump to express for a short time when I returned to work.

6.  Baby Clothes

For the essentials, I would recommend sleep suits, vests, onesies, hats and socks that are still in great condition from your first baby to save buying everything from scratch.

7.  Sling/Baby Carrier

Decide on whether a sling or a baby carrier will work best for you – we loved having both.

The BabyBjorn Carrier One

One of my favourite carrier is the BabyBjorn Carrier One – you can buy it here and read my review of the BabyBjorn Carrier One here.

8.  Glider Nursing Chair

We put off getting a glider for weeks with my first baby because I thought I’d be comfortable enough just sitting up in bed but I was wrong. In the end we got a second hand one of eBay in nearly new condition to save some money.

This is a similar one: Kiddicare Cloud Nine Deluxe Glider Chair and Stool (similar here).

9.  Bottles & Bottle Steriliser

Even if you intend to breastfeed, you might like to stock up on new feeding bottles (I love these from Lansinoh) in the event you might need them.

10.  Nappy Bag

I loved the Storksak Emily first time and the second time around I got a Storksak Elizabeth which is plenty big enough for two babies.

Storksak Elizabeth Changing Bag

The Storksak Elizabeth Changing Bag has plenty of space for two baby’s things.

You can read my review of the Storksak Elizabeth Changing Bag here and grab your own here.

11.  Car Seat

You might like to buy or even rent a capsule for the first six months. We loved our Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix car seat as this could also the attached to the iCandy pram.

You can choose to rent or buy a capsule car seat for the first 6 months.

12.  The Rest!

These are the main items I recommend but others are still necessary such as a medical kit (thermometer, nail clippers etc), nursing bras, baby towels, cotton wool, baby wash, a baby bath, baby monitor and nappy sacks. You probably already have these if there isn’t much of an age gap between babies.

I hope this helps you decide what to buy for baby.

Do you have anything to add to my second baby essential products list? Or anything you didn’t get?

Great Read! I’m due with my first Baby in July and i’m at a loss with a lot of what I need, so much out there and so much advice. loved this list. I am a list maker too! x

    • 30th March 2015 / 9:10 pm

      Oh thank you! :)

  2. 8th March 2015 / 12:58 pm

Great list, by the time I had my fifth (who was a month early) I literally hadn’t gotten him anything bar a few babygro’s which were too big and baby slings (most important item!).
I’d go for stretchy wrap, you can pick them up really reasonably priced second hand from ebay or join the ‘affordable Baby Slings For Sale Or Swap’ facebook group. I had one on my last and he was a reflux baby, it truly saved my sanity, it makes them feel they are all snuggled up tightly and yet you have your hands free to deal with toddler things!
Thanks for linking up with #SundayStars

Thanks Katie! Oh I hadn’t thought to look on FB, I will, thanks!

Ah how exciting I bet it feels different with the second as your not starting completely from scratch. We have the icandy too its so good, we got a great deal on a chair from Amazon, might be worth a look x

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:30 pm

I’ll definitely check out Amazon, thanks Heather! :)

  4. 28th February 2015 / 11:12 pm

Good list. It’s so nice that by baby #2 you have a better understanding of what they need than you did with baby #1. #lifewithboys #thelist

      Thanks Tiffany! :)

I found buying the nappies in bulk from Amazon saved me a load of money – but I have since swapped to Aldi nappies not only are they cheaper, but I think they’re better than Pampers :)

We have the Ergobaby 360 carrier and it has a newborn add on and it’s fab!

And yes I find I need quite a big change bag as my son occasionally still has accidents so I always carry around a spare set of clothes for him too.

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:29 pm

I really need to start looking at getting things in bulk on Amazon – thanks for that! :)

  6. 27th February 2015 / 12:03 pm

Great list. Baby #2 is due in July so thinking about what else I need. We are definitely going for a co-sleeper this time and my son was also big on baby wearing but I think we’ll get an Ergo this time as well as Moby as easier for out and about. I love the look of the iCandy if I’m feeling rich!

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:28 pm

Thanks Emma! Yes iCandys are not cheap but I think they are such a wonderful investment. Hope you’re feeling well :)

We kept everything from baby no 1. So second baby is in the moses basket again. We dont have a co sleeper or swing. #TheList

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:28 pm

I wish I still had my first baby’s things – would make it so much easier! :)

Looks like a really complete list! They used to sell Huggies nappies here when my 3.5 year old was a baby but I don’t remember them being that popular and when I looked again when my 9 month old was born they had discontinued them. We loved Water Wipes for when baby was really small. Steriliser wise we went for a microwave one second time around and I love it as it doesn’t take up countertop space and is very easy to clean (I live in London where the hard water leaves calcium deposits!). Re: change bag, I have the ‘Big Slouchy’ Babymel bag and is roomy enough for things for both girls.

I suppose something additional I bought for number 2 was a present for her from number 1 and vice versa!

    Good luck with everything!

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:27 pm

I’m definitely going to get a microwave steriliser this time – good plan :) And I love the idea present idea too to keep my toddler happy and involved, thanks! :)

  9. 27th February 2015 / 7:36 am

Great list. The second time around is so much different then the first. I would have a few special treats planned with your oldest. Having a new sibling can be confusing and a little unsettling. We just checked what was on in the area and some ideas lined up, made Maya feel that she was as important as the new arrival! Good luck x

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:26 pm

Thanks! Oh that’s great advice about planning some nice things with my toddler – I need to make her feel special and not side-lined :)

  10. 27th February 2015 / 2:50 am

Ahh the list.. I remember making one of these not so long ago. When it’s your second you realise there are some things your just don’t need

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:25 pm

So true – with the first my list was ENDLESS!

  11. 26th February 2015 / 11:48 pm

Doesn’t look like you have missed much. I was so organised for my second but sadly, by the time I had my 4th (and final yah) he got nothing. We laugh all the time because I would forget nappy bags, wipes, sometimes even the baby itself..

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:25 pm

Yay hope not and thanks! Ha ha I can imagine that with 4 – you have your hands full! :)

  12. 25th February 2015 / 10:56 pm

How exciting! I miss buying baby things. A sling was amazing for my eldest as I could get on and do all the housework etc whilst he was snuggled in, as he was a real kangaroo contact needing baby for the first few months! #brilliantblogposts

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:25 pm

Aww the sling was sooo good for that – lovely for mummy and baby :)

  13. 25th February 2015 / 10:41 pm

How exciting! I love my rocking chair, It is a John Lewis one I for from ebay for £20! x

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:24 pm

Ooh I love eBay for that – what an awesome bargain! :)

  14. 25th February 2015 / 8:35 pm

    Hello !!

Nope! Think you pretty much have everything covered :) The baby bag I used was this one: It was HUGE!! So might be worth having a look :)

By the way just noticed, the Bump And Me Bloggers badge is not showing up, the new one is over on at the bottom of the home page!

Anyway, Ill blog to you soon

    Daniella xx

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:23 pm

Thanks Daniella – that change bag looks beautiful!! New badge now added :) :)

  15. 25th February 2015 / 3:28 pm

    It’s coming up fast!!!

My list is getting there slowly, double pram research, my sling just arrived (wooooooooooooooo) and everything else we have still I hope.

Oh dummies. I intend to buy dummies just in case as we used them for 5 months last time but they are pink/blue and not gender neutral!!

    • 3rd March 2015 / 9:22 pm

Oh what sling did you get? I really need one! :)

  16. New Mumblings
    25th February 2015 / 9:26 pm

Great list! Am 34 weeks with number two and this was a really useful checklist. Went to the Baby Show last weekend and picked up a few more things – like a new monitor as ours has just broken. My new changing bag was from Mia Tui and they do a large one as well which seems pretty roomy and comes with lots of extras. Good luck! x
