The VTech VM9900 HD Pan and Tilt Video Monitor

From the very first night we used a video baby monitor, we were hooked. Before that night (and day!), I’ll admit I was one of those mums who was anxious whenever my baby was out of sight. I’m not just talking about the early days either, even now I still feel like this at times.

We withheld investing in a baby monitor camera for a while but when we did, it changed my life in so many ways as a new mum.

I’ve shared before the benefits I found from having a video baby monitor. I felt much less anxious when we moved our babies into their own room as I could hear and see them without having to move or risk waking them.

Plus, with a portable baby monitor, you can move it from room to room. That meant I could easily have a quick shower and keep and eye on them on the monitor without panicking that they were crying for me!

Review of the VTech Monitor with Remote Access

I recently heard about the VTech HD Pan and Tilt Monitor and was so excited to give it a try. Even though my last baby is now two years old, we still like to keep an eye on him at night.

Plus, on those (rare!) occasions we go to dinner and my parents babysit, it means we can use this WiFi baby monitor to have a quick peek at how he’s doing without having to bother my parents.

A long range baby monitor with remote access is so practical and helps my anxiety no end.

Product Features

This VTech wireless baby monitor has:

  • 5” colour viewing screen with touch screen technology
  • Remote viewing/recording via the free VTech app
  • Auto night vision
  • Zoom via the viewer or app
  • Motion activated alerts & recording
  • Record video to the SD card in the camera, the SD card in the Viewer, or your smartphone memory using the app
  • Pair, view and control multiple cameras
  • Split screen viewing
  • Two-way talk with camera from parent unit or remotely via the app – to reassure your baby from afar
  • Secure & encrypted local and remote video transmissions

How to set up the VTech HD Pan and Tilt Video Monitor with Remote Access

The VTech baby monitor iPhone app connects to the WiFi baby camera in just a few steps and, if your WiFi access is reliable, you’ll be good.

You can watch your baby via your smartphone or the Viewer device included. Make sure to charge the viewer fully before use.

After taking the camera and accessories out of the box, I grabbed the Quick Start Guide. Of course, WiFi monitors take a bit more time to set up – it isn’t just a case of plugging it in.

I followed the instructions to plug in the Camera and Viewer then paired them both. You will need your WiFi details handy for this – also make sure you choose a Security Key (password) that you won’t forget.

Then I downloaded the VTech Cam app, set up my new account, confirmed my email and signed in. I then followed the instructions on the phone screen to pair the app with my camera. You use the same Security Key as before.

Next, choose where you want the camera to be positioned. We chose the bedside table as it’s out of reach but has a clear view of my son.

What I love most about this VTech Video Monitor

This is the best baby monitor for us because it fits so well into our lives.

Both my husband and I like to keep an eye on our kids and being able to see and hear them via our smartphones or the viewer is so convenient. The full colour screen is crystal clear too.

The unit doesn’t take long to charge, and you can see in the top right of the screen how long the battery has left before powering down.

We’re about to move our son into a big boy bed soon and this is going to be the best baby monitor app for that as we will be able to record events. We will be able to see how he is adjusting to the change and make any changes we need to do to help settle him.

When I think back to the anxious parent I was in the newborn days, this would have been the best video baby monitor for us. My first baby used to wake up constantly in the night and we struggled so much in working out why and how we could help.

Just thinking back to that whole period of sleep deprivation and confusion still makes me shudder – it feels like yesterday. As much as I loved having teeny, precious newborns, I do not miss the lack of sleep and constant feeling that I wasn’t doing things right.

These days we travel a lot at weekends and this is a great portable baby monitor that will travel with us. If we have WiFi access, we’re set!

The downsides

Set up of the Viewer took a little longer than I expected but it’s a one-time thing.

This baby video monitor is accessed through WiFi so if you have no access, or your service is limited, it isn’t for you.

Final Thoughts

For me, having that constant access to watching my son while he sleeps is super reassuring. By constant, I mean I can check him whenever I want, not that I check him constantly. Because…sleep!

Would iPhone access to the camera give you peace of mind?

Is the nursery away from your bedroom and would having long range access to view your baby be valuable?

For me, when I occasionally travel for work, this is a big bonus! From reading other VTech baby monitor reviews, I know many parents who work late, or travel find this reassuring too.

It’s been working fine to leave our bedroom doors open as can hear my son in his room. But now that winter’s coming I’d rather be able to keep his room warm by closing the door.

With my new bundle of joy on the way, this would give me that peace of mind knowing I can check on bub as frequent as I want without waking bub up!

With my new bundle of joy on the way, I’d love to have some peace of mind to check on bub without making any noise to wake bub up!

My son often ends up at opposite ends of the bed to where he started so being able to pan and tilt is FAB!

    It would make life easier,
because when I can see from afar,
I am not scared or concerned,
but relaxed and at ease :)
    So I am pleased.

I have a toddler with uncontrolled epilepsy. This monitor would enable me to check on my toddler with having to go into her room – which in itself could startle her and cause a seizure.

My daughter is an asthmatic. With winter approaching this camera would be amazing so i can keep a closer eye on her especially during the night when she sleeps. This mumma bear is sleep deprived when she has the flu or a snotty nose as her breathing becomes difficult. The camera would help me by not having to get out of bed every half hour just to see how her breathing is.

I’ve just become a grandparent and asked to care for my grandson – this would give me peace of mind (and the parents) peace of mind.

I would be able to put my little girl down to sleep with the peace of mind that I am able to see her on the monitor, so as to not disturb her.

With a new little bundle on the way who will have their bedroom at the very front of the house, with our living areas at the opposite end of the long hallway this will give me peice of mind knowing that baby is safe and (hopefully) sound in their bed. With my older two I never had a monitor I just played a game of Russian roulette everytime I opened their door to check on them, bad mistake because have you ever locked eyes with a baby who is nearly asleep? ? Lol!

I can go about my day and gets lots of housework done whilst knowing that bub is safe.

We are desperate for another monitor. We just had a second baby and only have 1 monitor which is still in my 2yr olds room. Once I put our new bub in her bed I feel like I have to stay close by as we don’t have a monitor to hear her if she wakes up. We have a 2 story house and you can’t hear much from the bottom level which is where I would like to be able to relax and watch tv. If I had this monitor I would be able to ?

My monitor for my son stopped working, knowing that my son was ok without opening the door was a life saver and allowed me to sleep soundly, please give me my sleep back

My son and daughter-in-law have their bedroom at the opposite end of the house to my granddaughters bedroom. This would help immensely especially when little Bella is snuffly and coughing with the cool weather change. Peace of mind for both of them.

I have to move my 4 month old into his own room soon which is making me very anxious! A reliable monitor would really put my mind at ease and allow me to get some much needed rest.

With my sister moving from Adelaide to stay, a baby monitor will help with a little one and a 3 year old, not only a great housewarming gift but she can keep an eye on her little one as well

I can spy on my kids with one eye while enjoying my Netflix downstairs with the other eye.

Although I’m a live and let live kind of person, my somewhat irrational fear of my nephew freeing himself from his cot and going walkabout in the streets, makes nap time rather challenging.

  22. Louise
    / 12:16 pm

This would be wonderful so I don’t have to peek in to see if they are really in need or just making baby noises. Me peeking in is what wakes them. And sleep is the most important thing right now for everyone :)

A good nights sleep has evaded me
I’m up and down with number 3
With love to see without disturbing him
And not getting up on every whim!

I’ve got two darling babies under 18months, so life is set to full volume in this house!
My toddler loves his sister so much, he enjoys pointing out, poking, and naming her body parts whilst she is trying to sleep – his favorite is eyes! I’d love to have this monitor set up in our bedroom so that I can keep the kiddies separate for long enough to let my newborn sleep, and for my toddler to burn off his endless energy supply!

We are expecting bub #2 in august, and would LOVE a new, reliable monitor. The monitor we had for our firstborn would set off false alarms at 2am which gave me massive anxiety, and made those first few months a big struggle for my mental health. I would love to be able to start this journey as a mother of 2 on the right foot with a high-quality, reputable monitor ?

This would be amazing. To not disturb a sleeping baby to check on them is such a bonus. I am a shift worked and the thought of being able to have a sneaky peak at my sleeping baby would be a great reassurance on those long night shifts.
